The Diocese of New Ulm is hosting a prayer service for The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2:30 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Redeemer, 503 W. Lyon St., Marshall. Please join Bishop John LeVoir, Bishop Jon Anderson of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and representatives from several other denominations in praying for Christian unity. Bishop LeVoir will be the homilist, and there will be time for fellowship and refreshments afterwards.

YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN BISHOP LEVOIR AT THE 1 P.M. SCHOOL MASS ON MONDAY AT ST. MARY’S TO CELEBRATE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK.

NEXT WEEKEND, FEB. 4-5, WE WILL HAVE THE ST. BLAISE BLESSING OF THROATS AT ALL THE MASSES. Would those who are assigned as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist for those Masses please come up to the sacristy for instructions before Mass on how to help Father Bob bless throats.

Bishop LeVoir will be celebrating a Mass in honor of Consecrated Life. The Mass will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Church of St. Mary in Bird Island at 4 p.m. with a reception following. All are invited to show support for the many consecrated sisters who serve in our diocese. Participation by families and parish groups is encouraged as a way to promote vocation awareness.

Diocese Receives Building Grant

The Christ Our Life Capital Campaign was recently notified that they were the recipient of a $165,000 challenge grant to the campaign from the Catholic Extension Society. The challenge grant mandates that between Dec. 19, 2011, and May 31, 2012, Catholic Extension will match $1 for every $2 raised toward this project up to $165,000. In order to receive the full benefit of the grant, the diocese will need to raise an additional $330,000. The challenge grant was given with the intent of assisting the diocese in raising an additional half million dollars for the construction of the new Pastoral Center. This money is specifically dedicated to the chapel and gathering space in the new building. It is intended to raise new gifts and not to include payments on previously made pledges.  The diocese is planning a mailing in mid-February to all Catholics in the diocese who have not as yet given a gift or made a pledge. It seeks gifts to the campaign to meet the requirements of this challenge grant. Gifts are, however, welcome from anyone who wishes to make a gift, even if a previous gift has been given.

DIOCESAN MINISTRIES APPEAL RESULTS as of Jan. 18, 2012

Parish              Goal                 Amount Received          Variance           Number of Donors        Total Committed

Milroy              $3,574.53          $12,548.57                    $8,974.04          30                                 $14,018.57

Tracy                $6134.08           $12,085.00                    $5,950.92          33                                 $13,375.00

Walnut Grove    $2,250.63          $2,790.00                      $539.37             13                                 $2,790.00

It is not too late to send in your DMA pledge, extra pledge envelopes are found in the churches.  Remember what we get in over our goal comes back to the parish for parish projects and is not “taxed” as income for the Diocesan United Fund assessment. Tracy needs to bring in $150,000 over our goal to replace the school roof. Milroy is using the excess for running the parish. Walnut grove needs work on the furnace. Please be generous!!!

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT BECOMING A CATHOLIC? ARE YOU AN ADULT WHO MISSED BEING CONFIRMED?  Father Bob is having RCIA Classes for those who are looking into these options on Thursday’s at 6:30 p.m. Contact Fr. Bob if you are interested 629-4075.

Marriage Minute: Does the Church believe that people who experience same-sex attraction have equal dignity? Of course! Every single human person has great inviolable dignity and worth, including those who experience same-sex attraction. All persons should be treated with respect, sensitivity, and love. The Church calls everyone to a life of holiness and chastity, and to live in accord with God’s will for their lives. For more information on the Church’s ministry to persons with same-sex attraction, see USCCB, Ministry to Persons with a Homosexual Inclination (2006) or a local EnCourage chapter, which offers support for family and friends of persons with same-sex attraction. A collection pail for any of your loose change is in the back of the church. The student council thanks you for contributing in advance.

Special thanks to Fr. Bob Mraz for his Christmas gift of two beautiful wall hangings to the school—‘Noah’s Ark’ and ‘Precious In His Sight’. They are wonderful additions to our hallways.

The second Box Tops collection contest deadline is coming soon!  These are the family totals so far: Lions (25), Tigers (236), Bears (53), Monkeys (34), Zebras (371), Cheetahs (233), Armadillos (97), Giraffes (2), and Hippos (43). As you can see, there are three families in contention for the final goodies. The Zebras won last time and were treated to pizza. Are the rest of you families going to let them win again!? J You still have about a month to collect and turn in your Box Tops, so ask your neighbors, grandma & grandpa, aunts and uncles to help you, and save those Box Tops.  We are still short 596 Box Tops to at least tie the last contest total. The next deadline is February 15, 2012.

Thank you to all those who have turned in all the Box Tops, Campbell Soup points, Our Family UPC’s and Land-O-Lakes milk jug caps so far this school year. If 10 people each turn in 10 that’s 100 points earned, every little bit helps, even if it’s only one, cause “they all add up”! ;-) Thank you for your continued support of St. Mary’s School, Mrs. Schons, Coordinator.

YOUTH ENVELOPE WINNERS: Starting January 1, 2012 with the new 2012 youth envelopes we will offer a weekly prize to any youth whose envelope is drawn from the Sunday’s collection. The youth needs to put any amount of money in the envelope or write a good deed they did for someone on the envelope and drop it in the collection with their name written on the envelope. From those that come in the collection, one will be drawn at random each week and will be listed in the bulletin next to the collection amounts as above. The winner is invited to come to the sacristy before or after Mass to pick out one blessed religious item from the box of prizes. Supporting the parish and the work of God is NOT just the job of the adults, we need to get the children into the habit of sharing some of their blessings, allowance, wages and talents back to God for His work too. This should be a fun way to help develop our future church leaders.

NEWS FROM SAINT MICHAEL’S IN MILROY

Good People of St. Michael—  Why the Minnesota Catholic Conference is Promoting the Marriage Amendment     The Minnesota Catholic Conference is promoting the Marriage Amendment because of the critical role marriage plays in fostering the well-being of children and creating just social structures that strengthen civil society overall. Given the inherent connection between families, the well-being of children and the good of society, it is natural that the state supports and endorses traditional marriage (one man and one woman) in its laws and state constitutions.

Civil marriage exists in U.S. law because marriage between one man and one woman provides the most stable environment in which to raise children and keeps biological parents connected to their children. While death and divorce too often prevent it, we know children do best when raised in an intact home by their mother and father. In other words, traditional, natural marriage fosters strong community – or, the Common Good.

Question of the Week As you hear today's Gospel with its shouting demons, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart?  What are the evils in today's world that you pray God will free us from?

Welcome Home!  ~ Catholics Come Home to St. Michael’s. Thanks be to God for those who make St. Michael’s their home.  You provide a beautiful gift!  You are home – especially when home is what is most needed, longed for, and important. It’s a reminder to all of us.  This parish home is not sustained by busy elves who magically appear in the middle of the night to take care of things.  This parish home is preserved only by the love of many, many people who are here and who care day after day, Sunday after Sunday.  Yes, we still got more work to do to support this parish with warmth, prayer, love and care.  This parish home always must be here.  God is calling people back home, right here to St. Michael’s.  Let’s promise we will be here for them.  Blessings throughout this year – keeping St. Michael’s home “home.”

CCW     Next sponsored event is the Pro-Life Breakfast on Sunday, January 29, after Mass—Circle 2.

Milroy Lions All You Can Eat Chicken Dinner:     Saturday, Feb. 4, 5:00—8:00pm, Milroy Public School.  Adults..$8.00; Ages 6-12 $4.00; Under Age 6: Free.  4H Dessert Table & Food Shelf Collection Open to the Public- Everyone Welcome!.
